During my first trip to Sikkim I had been largely unimpressed by the beer scene in Gangtik, until some local help got me to The Square Restaurant and Bar located on Mahatma Gandhi Marg (MG Marg).
Not only did this deliver a well earned pint after a day at a dry wedding, but it also opened me up to the world of drinking opportunities that MGM in Gantok has to offer.

What The Square Restaurant and Bar Gangtok
The Square Family Restaurant and Bar in Gangtok is a locally registered restaurant and bar on Mahatma Gandhi Marg, Vishal Gaon that serves food and drinks to tourists and locals alike. The proprietor listed for The Square Family Restaurant & Bar is Mr. Vishal Nath Pradhan, with the business licence issued on 26 September 2024 and valid through 30 April 2025.
The establishment is independently owned, not part of a chain, and has become a popular local spot for its combination of approachable food and reliable draft beers. It has a casual interior with seating for both locals and visitors, tucked slightly off MG Marg to give a hidden‑gem feel.
Beer and Food at The Square
I was told that The Square Resurant and Bar offered one of the best IPA’s in Sikkim, as well as decent Momo. I was to find this very much to be the case!
Sample Food Items
- Momo (steamed/fried) – ₹200 (~$2.40)
- Chicken Tandoori (quarter) – ₹350 (~$4.20)
- Paneer Butter Masala – ₹300 (~$3.60)
- Pork Fry – ₹400 (~$4.80)
- Naan – ₹80 (~$1.00)
Sample Drinks
- IPA (draft) – ₹150 (~$1.80)
- Blonde Lager (draft) – ₹150 (~$1.80)
- Bottled Beer (Kingfisher, Tuborg) – ₹180–₹220 (~$2–$2.60)
- Standard Cocktails – ₹250–₹400 (~$3–$5)
The IPA was exceptionally smooth and drinkable, with a subtle bitterness that didn’t overpower. The second draft, a blonde lager, was light, crisp, and disappeared quickly. Overall, it’s a proper pint in a town where drinking decent beer can be a challenge.

The Square Vibe and Flavour
If you don’t know MG Marg it can seem a bit corporate and lifeless, BUT if you know someone to take you off the beaten track then there are plenty of cool bits off of the main drag. The Square is located exactly in one of these places and you would not know to come unless someone (like me) were to send you. Cozy indoors with friendly staff, relaxed vibe and almost speakeasy feel.
Drinks wise I found the IPA to be exceptionally smooth and dangerously easy to drink. The second draft was a blonde lager style, which I “reviewed” in about 4 seconds. Overall a cool little spot.

The Craft Beer scene in Gangtok
Gangtok is not a craft beer city yet, but it is slowly catching up. Most pubs along MG Marg pour standard lagers like Kingfisher or Tuborg, but a few places are experimenting with proper craft beers. The 241 Brewhouse is the only real microbrewery in the area, serving a small rotation of beers including a Witbier, a Hefeweizen and a dark Himalayan-style ale.
Some newer bars and rooftop pubs carry these local brews when available. There is also an Irish pub that is new to the town, but no one has been there, so we shall remain quiet on the matter.
Therefore I still rank The Square if you just want to get off of the high street and need a quick pint.
