On my way from Makassar in search of bulls getting slaughtered I decided to stop at the seaside town of Parepare. I assumed that while smaller than Makassar, it would still have a banging street food scene.
It would appear I was wrong, with there in fact being very little to do in this sleepy town. They do though have a waterfront with “Kampoeng Enjoy” which for the most part is the street food Parepare scene.

What the Parepare
Parepare is a relatively small city in South Sulawesi, with a population of around 117,000 people. It sits on the coast about 150 km north of Makassar and is one of the main stops on the road towards the mountains of Enrekang and eventually Rantepao and Tana Toraja.
In other words, if you are heading from Makassar to see the famous Torajan bull slaughtering ceremonies, Parepare makes a fairly obvious place to break the journey, although whether you should stay the night is open to debate.
Street Food Parepare
As Parepare is in Indonesia there are food carts littered around, BUT unlike Makassar they are far from everywhere. Most action though seems to be alongside the waterfront and the main roads. This was where I discovered Rocket Chicken (which will get its own article), as well as “Big Moo Moo” which specializes in milk drinks flavored or otherwise. This was a success. You see I really like milk.
There are also a few good seafood BBQ joints, as well as decent Indonesian fare everywhere, but for the most part it is more Kupang than Jakarta. The highlight though, as in where everyone goes for the street food in Parepare is Kampoeng Enjoy!
What the Kampoeng Enjoy?
Kampoeng Enjoy is a redevelopment of the old Pasar Seni area of Parepare, which had fallen into disuse. The idea was to turn the waterfront into a new public space where local small businesses could operate, while giving locals somewhere to eat, relax and generally hang out. It opened in February 2026 and is essentially a new attempt to create a proper food and leisure destination in the city, rather than just another collection of roadside stalls.
And you know what it was kinda cool, although I doubt there were then about 20 booths selling street food, alongside some outdoor sit down BBQ type joints.
I personally fell in love with some “Indonesian Dim Sum”, particularly Dim Ayam Mozzarella and Dim Sum Goreng Keju. The former sadly was out of stock, but the latter tasted like a cheesy fusion of a Chicken McNugget and a Chicken Kiev.
This was followed by Mie Ayam Bakso, which I can tell you via my new understanding of Bahasa means “noodles with chicken and meatballs”. This was had soupy and as god intended, with lots and lots of sambal. Everything tastes good with sambal. I was though not to stop there, as the night was to conclude with the best squid BBQ in Parepare!
After there was not much else going on save some curious locals lounging around by the waterfront. Believe me, you do not go to Parepare Sulawesi for the nightlife!

Nightlife of Parepare
This is a pretty much Muslim place, so drinking is heavily regulated. This has meant cafes getting busted for selling beer and Palm Wine. I’d honestly have given my right nut for some with my BBQ.
There are though a couple of bars, although I did not actually get to check them out.

So, yeah, street food Parepare and Parepare in general! This is but a stop off to get to better places! A nice enough stop off, but a stop off nonetheless.
