You know how they say don’t meet your heroes and to be careful what you wish for? Well that is my story for Maidreamin in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
This is basically a maid cafe where you know the staff are dressed as maids and they do shows. I had seen said shows on TikTok and made a beeline for here because of it. Well turns out Maidreamin is a rip-off.

What the Maidreamin?
Maidreamin was established in 2008 and is operated by Neodelight International, becoming one of Japan’s biggest maid cafe chains. The concept is pretty simple: girls dressed as maids serve customers, perform dances and turn ordering food and drinks into a bit of a theatrical experience. It is all very Japanese, with a heavy dose of kawaii culture, pop music and cosplay thrown into the mix.
The company has expanded well beyond its original Japanese market, with branches in Thailand and South Korea too. A big part of its international appeal is TikTok, where videos of the maids performing routines and interacting with customers have introduced the whole concept to millions of potential customers. And, you know it obviously has worked on idiots like me!

How much does Maidreamin Cost?
Nothing in Japan is cheap, even with a cheap Yen, but on the face of it Maidreamin is not that bad – but it is all a bit of hoax. Technically they have just an entrance fee to enter, OR you can do drinks packages, but not all is as it seems.
The standard adult entrance fee is ¥880 (about US$5.85) per hour, although this does not include your food and drinks. University and vocational students pay ¥660 (US$4.40), junior and senior high school students ¥550 (US$3.65), and primary school children ¥330 (US$2.20). Children below school age enter free. You also have to order at least one item of food or drink per hour.
For those wanting drinks packages, Maidreamin HYPER offers the following options:
- Standard entrance: ¥880 (US$5.85) per hour for adults, plus food and drinks.
- 60-minute all-you-can-drink package: ¥3,800 (US$25.35).
- All-you-can-drink until 11 pm: ¥6,000 (US$40), with entry required by 9.30 pm.
- 60-minute package with one drink: ¥2,500 (US$16.70).
- Late-night entry after 10.30 pm, including one drink: ¥2,500 (US$16.70).
HYPER generally operates between 8 pm and 11 pm, Monday to Saturday, although availability can vary by branch.
There are also group packages with food and entrance included:
- ¥3,500 (US$23.35) per person: Caesar salad, fries, takoyaki, chicken wings and octopus-shaped sausages.
- ¥4,700 (US$31.35) per person: The same selection, plus Japanese pork steak.
- ¥5,800 (US$38.70) per person: The food selection, plus a choice of omelette rice or pasta and edamame.
- Drinks-only party package: ¥3,800 (US$25.35) for 60 minutes of all-you-can-drink.
Prices in US dollars are obviously an estimate with the exchange rate going up and down like a tarts nickers.

Why is Maidreamin a rip-off?
I loved the comcept and the performance was everything I had wanted. Them 40 minutes in my 1 hour all you can drink package ended. Not just that but everything had to be done on a silly app. Overall though I could stomach it.
Then the ass-hats would not let me use the toilet because my hour had ran out. I mean FFS I had just spent an hour, no sorry 40 bloody minutes drinking. Not cool man and honestly it was a full on argument.
And then it was also just weird. There were a lot of alone Japanese guys here who were really into it. Also you can’t touch the girls, which is fair, but instead you say “meow meow” to get their attention – not sexy, just a bit wrong.
