What’s it like staying at Canna Ulawatu Bali?

Canna Ulawatu

AirBnB can be a real throw of the dice in many locations, but with Canna Ulawatu in South Kuta, Bali I feel that I discovered a real gem in the rough.

Here I got a really well located private villa with excellent amenities, such as a private pool, and all of it set me back just over $30 a night. Here’s the skinny on the place.

What the Ulawatu

Uluwatu is on the southern tip of Bali, famous for its cliffside views, surf breaks and temples perched precariously on the edge. It has the Eat Pray Love reputation with Westerners, and much like the rest of Bali it is pretty pretentious, full of yoga retreats, overpriced villas and expats pretending to be enlightened.

That said, it is undeniably scenic, with beaches tucked between cliffs, monkeys roaming the paths, and a few local warungs serving proper food. You get the mix of hippy culture and surf culture here, with just enough locals to keep it real.

What the Canna Ulawatu Bali?

Canna Ulawatu is a cluster of eight private villas, each with a very small private pool designed for lounging rather than swimming laps. They are owned by the Escapes Collective Team, who apparently run a few properties across Bali.

The villas are set in a rural area, down small dirt tracks, which means peace and quiet but also that you are firmly in the boonies. The villas themselves are simple but functional, with outdoor areas, tiny pools and just enough room to relax without feeling cramped. Perfect for a low-budget Bali escape with some privacy.

The rooms at Canna Ulawatu

OK, so the rooms here are very simple and quaint. There’s an outside area which has an electric cooker and freezer and then the pool, which is tiny and built for leisure and misbehaving with a guest rather than doing lengths.

The house is a simple studio affair with a bathroom and pseudo living area and a sink up one step. There’s an internet TV, but this is a bit redundant when you don’t have working internet. Still the guys here are helpful and you can rent a bike through them for $8. And when I say can I mean you have to, as otherwise you won’t eat. This is in the boonies….

Overall on Canna Ulawatu

OK, so the area is not exactly my bag of vegetables, but hey you cannot blame the owners for this. By area though I largely mean Uluwatu, with Canna Ulawatu “village” actually being super quaint and giving me almost Yangshuo vibes.

And honestly this was $30 a night, definitely and definitely the best private villa with a pool I have probably had in the world. If they can fix the internet I’d even move here!
