Best Marshallese Food at Riwut Outback

Pohnpei Guide

When it comes to eating, drinking, and pretty much doing anything in the Marshall Islands (or indeed the Pacific Islands) patience is key. And Riwut Outback is a case in point for this.

Known as having the best and indeed most authentic food in the Marshall Islands, it is also not renowned for speed. Fear not though, for if you have patience and the ability not to act like an entitled white person, the food is great.

What the Riwut Outback?

Riwut Outback is a small, locally owned restaurant in Majuro. It has been run by the same Marshallese family for several years and is known for sticking to traditional Marshallese food while also including some Filipino and Western dishes. The menu reflects the family’s own tastes and what they believe works for the local community, rather than trying to cater to tourists.

The place has a simple, no-frills interior, focused entirely on food rather than presentation or style. It is not fast, and it is not designed for large groups, but it is respected for its straightforward approach and consistency. Local people often visit for meals, and the restaurant has its own quiet reputation within Majuro.

The Food and Service at Riwut Outback

The menu here is Marshallese and Pacific in context, while also throwing in some Western and Filipino dishes. It is known for the local stuff, so there is great sashimi, as well as newer favourites like the Loco Moco. Seeing the inevitable chaos that would follow, I went for “Special 1,” which was bits of steak, raw fish, a huge pile of rice, and smashed potato. This was overall very good and had that true island vibe taste. After eating these dishes, you will never question why some of these cats are fat.

Now the service! We arrived an hour late and the chefs were kinda waiting to leave. This meant our group of 20 either got their food late or not at all. So, it is not perfect for huge groups, but for small groups just come with time to kill. This is Majuro, man, not Madrid.

  • Special 1 – Steak, raw fish, rice, smashed potato – $12
  • Loco Moco – Hamburger patty, rice, gravy, fried egg – $10
  • Sashimi Platter – Fresh local fish – $15
  • Grilled Fish – Local catch of the day – $12
  • Filipino-style Pancit – Stir-fried noodles – $9
  • Island-style BBQ Chicken – $11
