If you are looking for the best place to try durian in Yogyakarta then look no further than Lazorta Durian. This is a durian shop in the classic style, in that well, it sells durian, but it also has a killer durian menu.
This includes epic durian ice-cream, durian juice, es teler, durian and even durian with god damned freaking cheese on it. If though you are a weird white freak that can’t hack the stench of the stinky fruit then the place is best avoided.

What the Lazorta Durian?
Lazorta Durian is a durian shop on Jalan Magelang, north of central Yogyakarta, in the Sleman area. It started out much smaller, reportedly operating from a small rented shop opposite Jogja City Mall before moving to its current, larger location. It originally concentrated on whole and peeled durian, particularly durian brought in from Medan, before expanding into frozen durian, durian meat and a whole range of durian-based food and drinks.
The business has since expanded beyond the original Yogyakarta operation, with Lazorta’s own online presence listing outlets in Yogyakarta, Harapan Indah and Kalimalang. It is though importantly not a franchise!
The reviews are generally very positive. Current listings put Lazorta at around 4.6 stars on Google from roughly 2,000 reviews, while older individual reviews praise the sweetness and quality of the durian, the choice of varieties and the ability to try the fruit before committing to it. There are of course some moaners, but hey opinions are like assholes.

The Lazorta Durian Menu
On entry you’re greeted by staff furiously slicing away and opening the fruit. These then get weighed where you can buy them in the back. Durian goes up and down with price, but a small container was costing about 150,000 IDR, or $9+.
On the wall you are greeted by the menu, which I will list below. This has all the aforementioned stuff, as well as some strange gems. I tried much, but could not try everything there.

Gunung Durian (and other stuff)
In Indonesia they pretty much put cheddar cheese on everything. This includes strawberry milkshake, durian juices, coffee, banana fritters and the like. Yes, I know it sounds gross, but it is bloody good.
Therefore when I spotted Gunung Durian, I had to try it. So what is it? Well there’s zero listing online about it, but basically it is coconut cream, bits of jelly, a full piece of durian, or two and ice. This is basically es teler, a serious Indonesian dessert, but with cheddar on the top. For me the durian was excellent and it was classically Indonesian dessert. It was though the cheese what made it, with the bitterness just adding a real twang and neutralizes what would have been an overly sweet dish.
I also tried durian es teler, but it was inferior without the cheese. Honestly adding cheese to everything in Indonesia just bloody works. It was then washed down with durian juice, the first time I have had it in its purest form, and it was just amazing.
