The Lamana Hotel Guide

Lamana Hotel

While I do love a night at the Hilton Port Moresby when it comes to pure venues in the city you really cannot beat the Lamana Hotel.

And this is a huge reason that we stay here with our YPT guests. The Lamana not only boasts a number of restaurants, but also a barbers, a bowling alley and even the legend that is Gold Club.

In fact there is so much going on here, that you quite literally don’t have to leave. Quite the coup in a city with safety as questionable as Port Moresby.

What the Lamana Hotel?

The Lamana Hotel is one of Port Moresby’s most iconic institutions. Family owned and operated since 1989, it has grown from a simple guesthouse into one of the city’s most complete entertainment and accommodation complexes.

It is home not just to travellers, diplomats and business types, but also the Embassy of Cyprus. Sitting just a short drive from Parliament House, Vision City Mall and Jacksons International Airport, it’s an easy and strategic base for anyone staying in the capital.

The Rooms at the Lamana Hotel

The hotel has just over 60 rooms spread across four floors. There is no elevator, so you have to use the stairs if you are on the higher floors. The rooms are pretty nice and homely overall, with air conditioning, hot water, and Wi-Fi.

The staff are really cool, friendly and always helpful, which makes a huge difference in a city like Port Moresby. And you can get room with balcony to smoke on!

Facilities at the Lamana Hotel

The Lamana has so many facilities you really don’t need to leave if you don’t want to:

  • Restaurants: Spices and The Italian Restaurant Lamana.
  • The Gold Club: Famous nightclub in Port Moresby.
  • Bowling Alley: Ten-pin bowling for guests.
  • Sports Bar: Screens rugby league and other sports, with simple bar snacks.
  • Swimming Pool: Outdoor pool with deck seating.
  • Barbershop and Beauty Salon: Haircuts and grooming on-site.
  • Conference and Event Spaces: Ballrooms and rooms for meetings, weddings, and events.
  • Fitness Centre: Basic gym equipment.
  • Shuttle Service: Complimentary airport transfers.
  • Security: 24-hour on-site security.
  • Casino: Slot machines and a VIP room.
  • Family Amenities: Arcade games and kid-friendly areas.
  • Other Services: Laundry, ATMs, concierge, currency exchange, daily housekeeping.

Spices Restaurant

This is not just a great hotel restaurant, but probably one of the best restaurants in Port Moresby. The menu mixes Indian cuisine, which is a bit average, and Western fare, with the steak being pretty good.

The Italian Restaurant Lamana

I only recently went in here, and I have to say the Italian restaurant at the Lamana is an absolute gem. I had smoked salmon, as well as a lasagne, not to mention a vodka oyster shot. I mean what is not to like about that?

The Gold Club

This is one of the most notorious nightlife places within Port Moresby, somewhere where at the weekends it pumps as politicians and paupers come to hang out — as well as “freelancers”. A thumping club and a great place to meet people.

During the week it is a little more chilled, with them offering Rugby League and simple food like noodles, chips, hot dogs and my favourite, lamp flaps! This place will get its own article at some point.

Conclusion

If you want luxury in Port Moresby then it is still all about the Hilton, or the Stanley, but if you are looking for something that for all intents has a bit of everything then it is the Lamana.

This is particularly the case if you are planning to spend a longer period in Port Moresby, as it offers a safe haven from the mean streets, while providing you everything you need to survive.
