Bolu Buffalo Market Rantepao
Bolu Buffalo Market is in Tallunglipu, just outside Rantepao, and has a history as the main livestock market for the Rantepao and wider Toraja area. It was previously known as the Rantepao livestock market, with the name changing to Bolu after Tallunglipu became a separate district. The market has grown alongside the livestock trade and is now regarded as the largest livestock market in Indonesia and Southeast Asia – yes that makes it the biggest buffalo market in the world.
It is particularly famous for buffalo, but this is not some buffalo-only market. Pigs are also traded here in significant numbers, alongside vegetables, fruit, coffee and other food products. In fact, Bolu is one of the main places in Toraja where livestock and everyday goods come together in one enormous traditional market.
The scale is what makes Bolu interesting. On major market days hundreds of buffalo can be brought in, with the market becoming an important meeting point for farmers, livestock traders and buyers from across the region. It is therefore much more than a market, it is a social hub, and the place to do deals!
Market days and times of Bolu Buffalo Market Rantepao
Bolu follows the traditional six-day Torajan market cycle, so the main buffalo market is not simply held every Saturday or Sunday. The exact day moves through the normal calendar, meaning you need to check the local market cycle when planning your visit.
The livestock market is generally active from around 06:00 until 16:00, with the morning being the best time to see the animals arriving and the trading taking place.
How much for a buffalo?
Buffalo prices vary, a lot, with albino-looking ones allegedly going into the hundreds of millions of Rupiah. Although, to be fair, $1 is 18,000 Rupiah. Generally, a “normal” buffalo is around $1,400–2,200, with the really fancy ones getting up to 1 billion+, that’s $55k plus.
The reasoning? You guessed it! Good luck and prestige! Ironically, the expensive ones look a lot like cows. I am sure there might be a business opportunity here!
Buffalo prices in Rantepao
Ordinary black buffalo — IDR 25–40 million (US$1,400–2,200)
Better-quality or larger black buffalo — IDR 40–80 million (US$2,200–4,400)
Tedong Bonga — from tens of millions into the hundreds of millions of Rupiah
High-end Tedong Saleko — around IDR 500 million–1 billion (US$28,000–55,000)
Exceptional animals — IDR 1 billion+ (US$55,000+)
The price depends on things such as the colour, markings, horns, eyes, size and overall appearance of the animal. The really prized buffalo can therefore cost more than my house, my actual abode.

How to visit Bolu Buffalo Market?
Ideally you head here when it is open and then just walk around soaking up the atmosphere and shielding your nose. Alas, on the day I went it was closed, but you know the buffalo are still very much there!
What I found was interesting to say the least, with our guide explaining prices and saying buffalo are really being looked after quite well. It does though stink, with them literally needing a “shit river” to drain out the buffalo excrement. Altogether quite the YPT experience!

From central Rantepao, it is roughly 2km to the market. You can get there easily by car or motorbike, heading north from Rantepao towards Tallunglipu. Just look for Pasar Bolu or Bolu Market. I realize that might not mean much now, but it will make sense when you get there.
It is worth keeping in mind that when you visit it is possible to purchase a buffalo to slaughter. An FYI in case you do not make a funeral.
