The Crazy House Dalat

I do not think I have been to a place with as crazy an array of hotels as Dalat in Vietnam, and at the top of this list is the iconic “Crazy House”.

What the Dalat?

Dalat, or rather Da Lat is a small town in the mountains of Vietnam, which means it is cool between Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon and the Russian filled beach town that is Nha Trang.

This makes it a perfect place to break up a journey between the two, although there is no train station here, so yo have to take the journey by bus.

There are many reasons to come here, such as the gardens, Dalat street food, the climate and even just to stay at the Crazy House!

Where is the Crazy House Dalat?

It is on the bus circuit and vehicles from Nha Trang and Saigon will drop. You off here. It is just a 10-15 minute walk from the main town and all the wonderful Da Lat street food.

The Crazy House Story

A truly impossible place to describe, it is quite literally a cozy built house by some crazy people that combines fantasy with a child look dream of what a house might look like.

And the Crazy House Dalat is so crazy that as well ostensively being a hotel, it is also open until 8 pm for tourists to come walk around and look at the place – and they come in their droves to the Crazy House. And this is delisted tha fact that apart from climbing up and walking around there is noting to do here but “look”.

According to the creator ““Crazy House is a culmination of my life and creativity – it all came together in this structure,” Dang, daughter of Vietnam’s former general secretary Truong Chinh and curator of this hotel that can truly be called a work of art.

Plans were originally drew up in 1990, just as Vietnam was drifting away from central socialist planning, with the power of her father helping to make it a reality. Now it sits as an arming tourist draw in Da Lat and is a dark contrast to the French colonial buildings that make up the rest of the city.

What is it like to stay at the Crazy House Dalat?

The rooms here cost from just $30 up and come in a bunch of styles, with all having their charms. The room I stayed in was reminiscent of what I expect the Hobbits lived in, with there being a cute mirror on the ceiling if you are into that type off thing.

Restaurant wise there is a cafe, which is mainly there to look after tourists, but could also function for breakfast.

There is also a common room with a retro TV and well pretty much retro everything. The highlight of a stay the Crazy House though is that at night you pretty much have the run of the place, with tourists not allowed in after 8 pm.

Around the Crazy House Dalat

You are just 15 minutes walk away from “town” and the fabulous street food of Da Lat market. Closer to home there is also more than enough to keep you going, with a late night sore literally next door, as well as a bunch of quiet bars and restaurants, with one at least doing decent craft beer.

Essentially The Crazy House is close enough to what you need, whilst also making the most of its countryside setting.

And while this trip was truly done as a jolly, it is definitely a place that I would consider adding to our Southeast Asia Tours, if and when we decide to return to Vietnam.

How to visit the Crazy House Dalat

You can either stay here, come to the snack shop or take a tour of the Crazy House from 8 am to 8 pm daily.

To truly get the most though, I cannot recommend staying here enough….
