There’s a lot of things that China get really right and one of them is obscenely good hotel districts near airports, as in lots of cheap good hotels and a whole district of food and amenities surrounding it.
And this was what led me to Xinduo Hotel, some great BBQ and an eclectic district. This was on a layover from Mohe to Harbin, before our final destination of Beijing.

The Xinduo Hotel
This is a really plush hotel with obscenely good and huge rooms just 10 minutes drive from the airport that cost us RMB 180, or just $25. And for that price you also get your airport transfer to and from the airport. Amazingly this is largely standard, with me having done similar in places like Guangzhou and beyond.
RMB 286 ($40) is the rack rate, but we got it for the aforementioned RMB 180. This though is normal for China.Oh and they even include breakfast for this price, although you know, it is Chinese breakfast.
Street Food Harbin Airport
The other thing that makes these hotels so great is that they sport a whole food industry around them. With Harbin being so cold this does not mean street food per se, but rather local simple dining. This includes stone pot river fish and hotpot, but best of all is north-east China BBQ.
This led us to one of the coolest looking BBQ joints I have ever scene. The style was kitsch cyberpunk communist, which was nice, but more importantly the food was cracking. We had river fish, clams, heaps of BBQ, as well as the Dongbei take on cold noodles. OK it was no Pyongyang, but again a great take on this dish.
We then went to the store next door, which was equally cap to pick up soju and some Harbin beers – one of the biggest selling beers in the world.
