While I often wax lyrical about hotels being the “best” in a city, very now and again there’s a place that while not perfect, are so friendly and offer such great value that you fall in love a bit. And that is exactly what happened in Mohe at the IZI Hotel.
Now while I did not stay at every hotel in Mohe obviously that does not matter so much as there really are not that many hotels in this Chinese border outpost. In the small district that there is though, we found the IZI, where the staff, price and services were frankly amazing.

What the Mohe?
Mohe (漠河) is a small city in the far north of Heilongjiang Province, right on the Russian border and buried away in the forests of the Greater Khingan Mountains. With a population of around 54,000, it is officially the northernmost city in China, although calling it a city is perhaps pushing things a bit.
This is very basic China, a quiet frontier town where there really isn’t a great deal going on. It gets ridiculously cold, with winter temperatures dropping below -30°C, and snow sticking around for months. People come for the Arctic Village, the Russian border, the snow and the chance of seeing the Northern Lights.
The Hotel Scene in Mohe
I think we were actually staying in the hotel district of Mohe, which included two open hotels, as well as the Urbex style very closed Blueberry Hotel. Long story short there’s not many hotels in Mohe and not many tourists. People that do come here end to stay in the Arctic Village.

The Best Hotel in Mohe?
OK, so the Izi Hotel is kinda what it has on the sign, but also 华驿精选酒店 China Inn hotel. This is the boonies, so honestly who really knows. Anyway to why I rate the 华驿精选酒店 China Inn hotel.
Firstly it is cheap as fuck, we got our regular rooms, which were really nice that cost a mere $17 a night. I would put them to the 3/4 star level and they were clean, heated, comfortable and had a great view of what would eventually be snow.
Then there’s the restaurant! For breakfast they quite literally let us just order our own and they cooked at the exact time that you want it. This was included in the price. They also do a pretty mean lunch, again on request. I got them to do a class Dongbei cold noodles, as well as beef and potato, legit my favorite dish in China.
And last, but not least they let us sit up drinking, cleaned our clothes for free and put up with our bullshit with a smile. In my mind this is more than enough to decry it the best hotel in Mohe.
